OUR FAVORITES

There is so much to see and do in Mentone, it's hard to decide which way to go first. For us, the answer is usually just staying at the cabin and taking in the beauty right off our back porch for starts. We're usually coming back home to Little River Harmony to unwind from a crazy busy life anyway. But if we're looking for a little more adventure, these are some of our favorite things....

OFF OUR BACK PORCH

Canoeing!

Enjoy our two canoes and go up or down river for some breathtaking beauty. Head down river and have some fun at what we call Jump Off Rock before meandering down under the bridge on the way to Lake Lahusage. Canoe the lake to the dam for a splendid view. (Tie off canoes and walk over to the other side of the dam.) Bring a picnic and take it all it! From our house it's about a 45 min trip downstream. River at highest in winter / spring. Summer canoeing will require some portaging before you hit the bridge.

DOWN THE ROAD A PIECE

DeSoto Falls

Must see for sure. Start out here to jump start your Lookout Mountain / Mentone excursion. Takes your breath away. Hiking, swimming. Often they have canoes for rent too. Go for it!

DeSoto State Park Mountain Inn Restaurant

This is an ok restaurant, but we like it more for the look, feel and setting. Great place for hiking. Lots of trails. Ask about trail behind hotel---it's an easy little after lunch / dinner stroll. Beautiful.

Little River Canyon

Amazing waterfall and hiking!  This gets all the hype in our area. Must see. Gorgeous and awesome for swimming and just taking your breath away.

Wildflower Cafe

BEST restaurant in town. And the gift shop is the bees knees.

The Big Mill / Vintage 1889

For a taste of yesteryear there's no better place than The Big Mill. Located in the heart of downtown Fort Payne, it gives a hint of what this old Sock Capital of the World used to feel like. This old factory turned antique mall will capture your attention for a little walk back into time. Make sure to go upstairs! The old staircase alone is worth the trip...imagine how many feet travelled those stairs! When you're all done, make sure to check out the Vintage 1889. Great pub-like feel, casual dining, and super cheap drafts. Last we checked they were $2. :)

Horseback Riding

Nearby and nice little trail rides. 1 and 2 hour rides. $30  / $50 rides but check with them to confirm.

Downhill Skiing!

Best deal in town. Exhilarating ROI in FUN!

Only ski hill in Alabama!

Open Dec 15 - Mar 15. The make snow whenever the mercury drops below 32 degrees.

Sweet little hill with a big heart. Warm up for Colorado! Ski instructors great for beginners. Snow boarding too. Day / Night lift tickets. We like the night skiing…makes you feel like you’re really on a snow capped mountain. :)
